From early modern identities and bodies to state-socialist emancipation campaigns, queer life under communism, and anti-gender politics in the postsocialist countries, the history of gender and sexuality in the region raises questions that are as historically rich as they are still politically relevant. Six internationally recognized scholars will explore these questions from a range of disciplinary perspectives and geographical locations across East Central Europe, tracing a long historical arc from the medieval period to the contemporary moment. Six lectures will be supplemented by three reading seminars that discuss the lecture material, relevant research literature, and primary sources.
